-The Theory Test-
In order to take a practical driving test and become a full licence holder you first have to pass a Theory Test. This can be done at any point in your learning – either before you start driving lessons or during your progress.
It is important to point out however that once you pass your theory test, you must pass your practical test within TWO years otherwise you’ll have to retake the theory test. This isn’t an issue for most people though.
The Theory Tests consists of two different sections, but you can do them in whichever order you like.
There’s a multiple choice exam of 50 different questions including road signs, rules of the road, safety, vehicle handling & maintenance, and attitude towards other road users and much more.
To pass you’ll need to get at least 43/50 (86%) of the questions correct.
Then there’s the hazard perception test.
This consists of 14 short voice clips. 13 of which contain ONE developing hazard, while the other clip contains TWO developing hazards – and this is randomly placed in amongst the 14 video clips in the test.
The general gist of the hazard perception test is that you click the screen as soon as you see a developing hazard. The sooner you see it and click, the higher score you get on that clip.
You can score up to 5 points for each developing hazard.
To get a high score, click the mouse as soon as you see the hazard starting to develop. You do not lose points if you click and get it wrong. However, you will not score anything if you click continuously or in a pattern.
The pass mark for the hazard perception test is 44/75.
To pass your theory test you must pass BOTH the multiple choice and hazard perception sections. If you only pass one you unfortunately fail the test and have to retake at a later date.
